Class 3 - April 2008

 

Religious Education

The children continue to follow Salford RE vision 2000 scheme of work. This term, we will explore the effect of the Holy Spirit on the lives of the Apostles and the Church today. We will be preparing and taking part in our own class Liturgies and a class assembly next half term. Mrs Schofield will be preparing children for their Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

 

English

The children will be following the new Literacy Framework. We will be covering the units of, Stories from Other Cultures, Stories which raise issues / dilemmas, Plays, Information texts and Persuasive texts.

 

Mathematics

The children will be following the National Numeracy Strategy covering units on all aspects of maths. Targets will be sent home later in the term.

 

Science

This term the children will be studying Keeping Warm and Friction. Throughout the units the children will use scientific investigation in order to explore these areas of science for themselves.

 

ICT

This term the children will be looking at the unit of Introduction to Databases. The children have the opportunity to use ICT throughout other curriculum subjects.

 

History

History and Geography are taught alternate half terms throughout the year. In the first part of this term we are studying the topic of, What is it like to live here in the Past?  The focus in on the local community, where the children will compare two or three periods of time. They will also look at houses, shops, schools, civil and service buildings and an historical site. A trip to look around the Town Hall in Todmorden, has been arranged for May.

 

Geography

In the second part of the term we will be doing Geography and looking at the topic of Investigating Our Local Area. The children will develop their geographical ideas and skills by studying their own locality.

 

 

 

Design and Technology

Design and Technology and Art and Design will be taught alternate half terms throughout the year. Our topic the first part of this term is Money Containers. The children will look at how products are designed for different purposes and different users, learn how to sew a range of different stitches and design and plan their own money container.

 

 

 

Art

In the second half of the term we will be looking at the unit Journeys. In this unit, the children will explore how signs, symbols and metaphors can be used to communicate ideas and meanings about a journey. They will produce a mixed-media work, combining drawings, painting, collage and print-making techniques. They will also learn about artists, craftworkers and designers who communicate their ideas through signs and symbols.

 

 

.Music

Mrs Cooper, Mr Bath and Mrs Dawson continue to teach Pupils on Tuesday  and Thursday. Children will be controlling sounds through singing and playing and using their performing skills. They will be creating and developing musical ideas to improve their composing skills. By responding, reviewing, listening and applying knowledge and understanding the children will be using their appraising skills.

 

Physical Education

The class will continue to visit Shade swimming baths for weekly lessons on Mondays. On Wednesdays we are doing Gymnastics and Dance. Our Games topic this term is Net games, which takes place on Thursdays. The children will need their outdoor PE Kits on this day.

 

 

PSHE & Citizenship

These subjects are cross curricular but we will also have a weekly circle time to discuss personal emotions and responses and how we will cope with these in our relationship. We are using SEAL in our PSHE lessons and our topics this term are Its Good to be Me, Changes and Relationships.

 

 

Homework

Each week your child will have a list of spellings to learn for a test the following Friday. Times tables will also be set to learn off by heart. Reading books will be changed every Tuesday and Friday when necessary. Every Friday there will be English and Maths tasks to complete for the following Wednesday. Occasionally, tasks in other subjects may be set during the week. Please sign their Homework Diary to show you have seen the homework allocated. Mrs Cooper will be checking these.

Religious Education

English

The children will be following the new Literacy Framework. We will be covering the units of Stories from Other Cultures, Information Texts and Poetry – Exploring Form this term.

 

Mathematics

The children will be following the National Numeracy Strategy covering units on all aspects of maths. Targets will be sent home later in the term.

 

 

Science

This term the children will be studying Habitats and Light and Shadows. Throughout the units the children will use scientific investigation in order to explore these areas of science for themselves.

 

 

ICT

This term year 3 will be looking at Manipulating Sound and year 4 will be looking at modelling effects on screen.

 

 

History

In the first part of this term we are studying the topic of Ancient Egypt. History and Geography will be taught alternate half terms throughout the year. In this unit children find out about the way of life of people living in ancient Egypt from archaeological discoveries. The children will develop their understanding of a society; identify the different ways the past is represented; and use sources of information to make simple observations.

 

 

Geography

In the second part of the term we will be doing Geography and looking at the topic of Weather Around the World. The children will develop their ideas about weather conditions around the world and the link between weather and tourism.

Design and Technology

Design and Technology and Art and Design will be taught alternate half terms throughout the year. Our topic the first part of this term is Pop-Up Books. The children will look at the design of books and make a book that has pages that incorporate moving parts with linkages and levers.

 

 

 

Art

In the second half of the term we will be looking at the unit, Take a Seat. The children will explore the designs of chairs, look at the designs of chairs from the past and from other cultures and design their own chair for a character or an occasion.

Music

Mrs Cooper will be taking the children for hymn practice on Tuesday afternoons. On Thursdays the class are continuing to be taught music by Mrs. Dawson.

 

 

 

Physical Education
