Welcome to Oak Class
Year 5 and Year 6
Mr Carr, Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Green and Mrs Longden
Spring Term

Our recent London trip was a huge success and a fantastic experience for everyone involved. The children had an exciting and memorable day exploring the capital and seeing some of London’s most famous landmarks.
Highlights of the trip included a visit to Parliament, where pupils learnt more about how the UK government works, followed by a ride on the London Eye, giving everyone incredible views across the city. Along the way, there was plenty of sightseeing and excitement as the children spotted well-known landmarks.
After a busy day of exploring, the children finished the trip with a well-earned McDonald’s tea, which was definitely a popular part of the day! Even Mrs Green had a chance to kick her feet up and relax – and we’ve got a photo to prove it.
The children were a credit to the school throughout the trip and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. A big thank you to the staff who helped make the day run so smoothly.

Class Trip
Oak Class recently enjoyed a fantastic visit to Todmorden High School last Thursday, where they had the opportunity to experience a pop-up planetarium. The immersive session gave the children an exciting insight into space, as they explored planets, stars and the wider solar system in a fun and interactive way.
The visit supported the children’s learning in science, helping them to develop their understanding of space while sparking curiosity and enthusiasm. The realistic visuals and engaging presentation captured the children’s attention and brought their classroom learning to life.
Oak Class were a credit to the school throughout the visit, showing excellent behaviour and asking thoughtful questions. It was a memorable experience that inspired awe and wonder and will continue to support learning back in the classroom.

Class Novel

We have recently finished reading Holes by Louis Sachar, a story the children have enjoyed. It has led to great discussions and excitement during our class story time. We are now looking forward to choosing our next class novel and continuing our reading adventure together.
Trip to the Etihad Stadium
We had a wonderful trip to the Etihad Stadium. As part of the trip, we had a tour of the stadium and a workshop, which explored a day in the life of a footballer.

World War II Day
To celebrate our work in history on World War II, Mrs Whitehead planned a World War II day. In the morning, the children imagined they were evacuees and had to work in pairs to make decisions to reach safety. They worked with Mrs Longden to learn about rationing. In the afternoon, Music for the Many shared some World War II songs. We also spent time looking at morse codes and completed some code breaking activities. A highlight of the afternoon was the World War II stew made by Ms Rudman.

Macbeth
We have enjoyed reading and studying an adapted version of Macbeth. As a class, we completed reading, drama and writing activities. The children finished their work on Macbeth by writing a playscript set after the original play. The general plot of the play is that the ghost of Macbeth visits the ageing king, Malcolm. Macbeth warns Malcolm of the final prophecy of the Witches that Banquo's son will be king.

Primary Mathematics Challenge (Bonus Round)
Some of the children in Year 6 completed the Primary Mathematics Challenge Bonus Round. These children achieved above 20/25 on the Primary Mathematics Challenge and therefore were invited to take part in the Bonus Round.

Voices for Equality (Year 6)
At the start of the Summer term, Year 6 (2024) took part in a programme called Voices for Equality. Over two days, the children learnt about the inspiring life and work of Anne Frank through readings and video extracts from her diary.
The children also explored contemporary and historical forms of prejudice and discrimination. They reflected on the dangers if these views are left unchallenged.
The children have now planned an assembly and workshops to share their learning with the rest of the school.
Following the programme, we are very pleased to share that we now have a Year 6 student as an Anne Frank Ambassador. The role of an Anne Frank Ambassador is to work towards a world free from prejudice, inspired by the life and work of Anne Frank.
